Science should particulary contribute, if it does not already, to the effort of bridging the gap between "local/lay" and "scientific" knowledge. Such an effort has two aspects reflecting a two-way flow of knowledge. This first aspect can be seen in making lay knowledge "graspable" by science. It presupposes an enchanced use of qualitative approaches, by use of which this "soft" knowledge can be incorporated into scientific calculations. At the same time, science should pay extreme attention to the problem of how to make its findings or results more understable to non-scientific people who might play a key role in the decision making sphere, or for the public in general.
