Polydimethylsiloxanes in a commercial silicone oil sample were characterized by off-line combinations of supercritical fluid chromatography with two mass spectrometry techniques. SFC was used to separate polydimethylsiloxanes on micropacked capillary columns (lenght 150 mm, i.d. 320 .mu.m, packed by ODS 5 .mu.m particles). The fractions for the identification studies were obtained from an SFC run at defined time intervals, when the restrictor was pulled out from chromatographic flame ionization detector and inserted into a glass vial with acetone. For the identification of individual oligomers, GC-MS was used for low molecular ones and MALDI-TOF MS for higher ones, respectively. The range of determined molecular masses was from 474 to 5500 Da.
