We report successful germline transformation of the silkmoth Bombyx mori with the piggyBas transposon. Besides the Pax-6driven GFP selectable marker, we inserted into the Bombyx genome a heat-inducible hsp 70 cassette from Drosophila. For the first time we show that a transgene can be induced in vivo by heat shock in a non-drosophilid insect, establishing a system for future transgenic studies.
