    Absorption bands, corresponding to the crystal field excitations of the Sm3+ ions in SmBa_2Cu_3O_6, have been observed by infrared transmission spectroscopy and assigned to transitions from the lowest energy levels of the 6H_5/2 multiplet to the excited multiplets 6H_7/2, 6H_9/2, 6H_11/2, 6H_13/2, 6F_7/2, and 6F_9/2 of Sm3+ ions on the regular D_4h-symmetry sites and the C_4v-symmetry Ba sites.
