The Mareš-Raýman Controversy and the Czech Academy of Sciences. A conceptual and methodological confrontation of B. Raýman (1852-1910), who stressed the empirical element of a scientific work, and of F. Mareš (1857-1942), who gave preference to its theoretical component. In their time, the first opinion saw the mechanistic natural science as perfect and completed; the second opinion held it to be problematic and open. This controversy about the principles of knowledge in natural sciences ended in 1903, and it was empiricism that won transient the day.
