Fossil dinoflagellate cysts inhabit wide ranges of freshwater to open marine environments. They characterize environments with lower ("anoxic") and normal oxygen content. Low dinocyst diversity and the representatives of Circulodinium characterize dysaerobic conditions near the Cenomanian/Turonian boundary.
