The observed long-term trends form a consistent pattern of global change in the upper atmosphere and ionosphere at heights above 50 km. The upper atmosphere is generally cooling and contracting, and related changes in chemical composition (minor components) are affecting the ionosphere. The dominant driver of long-term trends in the last 3-4 decades is increasing greenhouse forcing, although there may be contributions from anthropogenic changes of the ozone layer and long-term increase of geomagnetic activity throughout the 20th century.
Pozorované dlouhodobé trendy vytváří konzistentní obraz globální změny v horní atmosféře a ionosféře na výškách nad 50 km. Horní atmosféra se celkově ochlazuje a smršťuje a s tím spojené změny v chemickém složení (v malých složkách) ovlivňují ionosféru. Hlavní příčinou dlouhodobých trendů v posledních 3-4 desetiletích je zesilující skleníkový efekt, i když mohou přispívat i antropogenní změny ozónové vrstvy a dlouhodobý růst geomagnetické aktivity během 20. století.
