Phylogeographic study of mitochondrial DNA variation revealed a complex glacial history for the bank vole primarily inhabiting temperate forest. Glacial refugia located in Central and Eastern Europe, as opposed to the traditionally recognized Mediterranean refugia, had made a major contribution to the modern population of this species in Europe.

Fylogeografická studie variability mitochondriální DNA norníka rudého odhalila komplexní glaciální historii tohoto druhu primárné obývajícího společenstva temperátního lesa. Jako zdroj postglaciální kolonizace zaledněných oblastí se na původu moderní evropské populace tohoto druhu významnou měrou podílely evoluční linie, které přežily poslední pleistocénní zalednění v refugiích ve střední a východní Evropě.
