V dnešnej dobe prebieha niekoľko predklinických štúdii génovej terapií, ktoré by mohli okrem potlačenia príznakov chorobu spomaliť, dokonca i zastaviť, a to znížením tvorby toxickej mRNA a znížením mutovaného proteínu, či nahradením poškodeného génu.
If an effective treatment is to be invented, it is necessary to know not only the cause of the disease but also the overall pathophysiology of the disease. Animal models of disease can serve for a thorough study of pathophysiological changes and at the same time they can be used as model organisms for testing potential therapy. Many neurodegenerative diseases have no cure so far, just therapy that can suppress symptoms. Nowadays, several preclinical gene therapy studies are ongoing that could, in addition to suppressing symptoms, slow the disease, or even stop it, by reducing the formation of toxic mRNA and reducing the mutated protein, or replacing the damaged gene. Positive results of gene therapy in animal models give a great hope to patients who are suffering from “yet” incurable neurodegenerative disease.
