Přehled obrazů (asociací, metafor, stereotypů, mýtů), s nimiž je čtení ve své historii spojováno – čtení jako esoterická výlučnost, čtení jako pouhá náhražka mluvené řeči, čtení jako činnost netvůrčí, podřadná, čtení jako rituál či liturgický akt, čtení jako ohrožení společnosti, čtení jako civilizační síla, čtení jako činnost netvůrčí, podřadná, čtení jako důvod naříkání starých na mladé, čtení jako ženská marnivost, čtení jako akt výsostní samoty a intimity, čtení jako pouhá pasivní činnost, čtení jako sociální bariéra. Čtení svou podobu získává ne pouze způsoby, jimž je uskutečňováno, nýbrž i kulturními obrazy, jimiž na nás působí. Na jedné straně jsme to my, kdo se podílejí na jejich utváření, na straně druhé to však jsou právě tyto obrazy-metafory-představy-stereotypy, jež nás utvářejí.

An overview of the images (associations, metaphors, stereotypes, myths) with which reading has been associated in its history – reading as esoteric exclusivity, reading as a mere substitute for spoken language, reading as an uncreative, inferior activity, reading as a ritual or liturgical act, reading as a threat to society, reading as a civilizing force, reading as a non-creative, inferior activity, reading as a reason for the old to lament the young, reading as female vanity, reading as an act of privileged solitude and intimacy, reading as a mere passive activity, reading as a social barrier. Reading takes its form not only in the ways in which it is performed, but also in the cultural images through which it affects us. On the one hand, it is we who participate in their formation, but on the other hand, it is
these images-metaphors-images-stereotypes that shape us.
