Novodobá medicína učinila v souvislosti s moderními technologiemi obrovský pokrok, který přinesl vynikající výsledky v léčbě pacienta. Minimálně od druhé poloviny 20. století ovšem někteří autoři poukazují na to, že technologický vývoj vedl k odcizení lékaře a pacienta, narušení důvěrného vztahu a v konečném důsledku tak i k dehumanizaci medicíny. Zatímco již od hippokratovské doby měl a musel být lékař filanthrópos, tj. lidumilná osoba, v současné době se díky technologiím často zaměřuje na tělo pacienta jako centrum nemoci a tím jej zpředmětňuje. Z této perspektivy se nabízí otázka, zda by vyšší míra soucitu ve vztahu lékaře a pacienta nemohla pomoci obnovit základní hodnoty, které se v něm mají objevovat.


Modern medicine has made enormous progress in connection with modern technologies, which has brought excellent results in the treatment of the patient. However, since at least the second half of the 20th century, some authors have pointed out that technological developments have led to the alienation of doctor and patient, the disruption of a confidential relationship, and, ultimately, the dehumanization of medicine. Since the time of Hippocrates, a doctor had to be a philanthropist, i.e. a philanthropic person. Nowadays, thanks to technology, he often focuses on the patient's body as the center of the disease and thereby objectifies it. From this perspective, the question arises as to whether a higher level of compassion in the doctor-patient relationship could help restore its basic values.
