    This paper introduces the core questions as well as the findings of a research project, which ultimately resulted in a book entitled The Emerging Contours of the Medium: Literature and Mediality (in Czech, 2020). Our research posed the questions: How should the disciplines of literary and media studies be correlated? Why has the concept of medium suffered a marked absence and latency in literary criticism and related disciplines? How does the history of the concept’s slow emergence – and also its shifts and turns – influence the very nature of the questions that literary criticism and other humanities are currently inclined to ask? We select the frameworks of the debate from within three main research areas: 1. (pre)history of media thinking, 2. media philosophy and anthropology, and 3. current intersection points between literary and media theory.
