Básnické dílo Jana Nerudy je v knižní stduii Nerudův verš podrobeno systematickému rozboru, který zahrnuje čtyři základní oblasti versologického výzkumu: metriku, rytmiku, strofiku a rým. Výklad postupuje chronologicky – jeho osu tvoří sled Nerudových básnických knih od prvotiny Hřbitovní kvítí (1858) po dvojici posmrtně vydaných sbírek – Zpěvy páteční (1896) a Knihu epigramů (vydána až 1956). V každé sbírce jsou podrobně charakterizovány veršové struktury a konfigurace, jejich vzájemné vztahy a vazby ke strukturám jiného řádu (žánr, téma, kompozice aj.).

The Metrical Structure of Jan Neruda's Versification represents a systematic and complete analysis the metrical structure of Jan Neruda’s poetry. The body of Neruda’s poetical work is subjected to systematic analysis in four basic areas: meter, rhythm, stanza, and rhyme. The interpretation follows the sequence of Neruda’s collections of poems from the juvenilia Hřbitovní kvítí [Cemetery Flowers] (1858) to a pair of posthumously published collections, Zpěvy páteční [Friday Songs] (1896) and Kniha epigramů [Book of Epigrams]. The study focuses on poetry collections as clearly defined historical units which take on particular pertinence in Neruda’s work because of the author’s selectivity and emphasis on poetic compilation.
