This essay locates its concerns in the context of changes in US and English higher education policies that have seen the ‚privatization‘ of higher education and a shift from it being regarded as a social right to something that is seen as the personal responsibility of individuals. In this vein, it is argued, the call to deconalize the university can be seen as paradoxical to the extent that the neoliberal university claims to be race-blind and only interested in the differences between individuals and not those between groups.
