Korunu římského krále Karla IV., kterou po své korunovaci v roce 1349 věnoval katedrále v Cáchách, chránily antické gemy s Medusou. Antické gemy na koruně zdůrazňovaly kontinuitu Svaté říše římské s jejím antickým předchůdcem. Toto poselství bylo pro Karla IV. klíčové, protože jím vyhlašoval svou kandidaturu na císaře římského, nástupce antických římských císařů.

Ancient Roman gems with Medusa protected Charles IV’s crown of the Roman king of 1349, which he gave to the Aachen cathedral after his coronation. The gems on this crown stressed the continuity of the Holy Roman Empire with its ancient predecessor. The message was crucial for Charles IV, who with his Aachen coronation proclaimed his strong will to become the Emperor and hence the successor of the ancient Roman rulers.
