Tato publikace si klade za cíl představit ve velmi kompaktní formě stav současné diskuse o eutanazii, případně dalších formách lékařské asistence na konci života pacienta (paliativní péče, sebeusmrcení pacienta za pomoci lékaře atd.). O této problematice u nás v posledních letech sice bylo už leccos publikováno, ale zdá se nám, že mezi odbornou lékařskou (natož laickou) veřejností je zatím velmi nízké povědomí o pojmových rozlišeních a argumentech, které na toto téma nabízí současná bioetika. Předkládaná publikace vzešla ze spolupráce mezi Filosofickým ústavem a Ústavem státu a práva Akademie věd České republiky v rámci programu Strategie AV21, který podporuje interdisciplinární výzkum.

This treatise strives to present a comprehensive review of the current debates concerning euthanasia and other forms of medical assistance at the end of a patient’s life (palliative care, suicide assisted by a physician etc.). There has been a host of publications tackling this topic in our country in recent years, but it seems to us that only few medical experts, let alone laymen, have a clear-cut view of concepts and arguments provided by current bioethics. The treatise has been compiled in cooperation with the Philosophical Institute and the Institute of State and Law of the Czech Academy of Sciences as part of the Strategy AV21 Programme which fosters interdisciplinary research.
