Studie se zabývá motivem a tématem cirkusu v artistní i populární literatuře 19. a první poloviny 20. století, s přesahy do oblasti filmu a dramatu. Sleduje také proměnu jejich významů: prostor romantiky a dobrodružství, prostor sociálně vyloučených, exotika a hravost, hledání rovnováhy. Odhaluje zásadní symbolické postavy smutných klaunů a nejednoznačných provazochodců a kouzelníků, kteří v literatuře přetrvávají jako sebeidentifikační figury moderního umělce.

The paper inquires into the motif and theme of circus in the “high” and also popular literature of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century and extending into plays and film. It also follows the transformation of their meanings: the space of romance and adventure, the space of socially excluded, exotics and playfulness, the search for balance. It reveals the fundamental symbolic characters of sad clowns and ambiguous ropewalkers and magicians who remain in the literature as the self-identification figures of a modern artist.
