Full (both temporal and spatial) dispersion analysis of plane square linear and biquadratic serendipity finite elements for Newmark family of time integration methods in transient elastodynamics is presented. The effective time step size (Courant number) is established for implicit time integration schemes with both consistent and lumped mass matrices. Different lumping schemes for diagonalization of mass matrix are considered. This work is compared with previous study of dispersion analysis of explicit central difference method with lumped mass matrix. Dispersion errors of the phase velocity are given for different values of Courant number. Some numerical examples are given.
