Biochemical systems in living cells are large and complex. Moreover, they can contain certain chemical species in so low concentrations that random movements of individual molecules can substantially influence the behaviour of the entire system. Stochastic description enables to model this random behaviour mathematically. Based on an example of circadian rhythms, we explain basic ideas of the stochastic modelling, compare the deterministic and stochastic model and show their qualitatively different behaviour.
