Shape oscillations of a spherical bubble or drop, which has a part of the interface fixed due to contact with a solid support, are studied analytically using variational methods. Linear oscillations and irrotational flow are assumed. The analysis is parallel to those of Strani and Sabetta (J Fluid Mech 141 (1984)) and Bostwick and Steen (Phys Fluids 21 (2009), 032108), but is able to determine also the response of bubbles or drops to the imposed movements of its support or variations of its volume. The analysis leads to the equations of motion with a simple structure, from which the eigenmodes and the frequency-response to periodic forcing are easily determined.
