The article examines the contributions of renowned Czechoslovak Byzantinist Bohumila Zástěrová to the study of how early Slavs and other so-called barbarians were perceived in Byzantine sources. Zástěrová was one of the first scholars to critically analyze Byzantine primary texts on the Slavs, identifying recurring themes and stereotypes. She argued that, despite the strong influence of ancient topoi, many aspects of the information in Byzantine texts may have been based on reality. Even though over 110 years have passed since her birth, Zástěrová's insights remain relevant today, and her works continue to be cited in international scholarly literature.
