The presentation described the effect of pyrolysis on the removal of organic contaminants (pharmaceuticals, endocrine disrupters, PAHs, PCBs, PFAS) from sewage sludge at a wastewater treatment plant using a commercial pyrolysis unit. It was shown that under the given conditions of the unit setup, the contaminants can be removed or their concentration was reduced below the detection limit of analytical methods, respectively. The possibility of certifying the biochar produced from the sludge (solid pyrolysis residue) as a soil amendment was also described.
