Implicitně pak zvolené téma otevírá rovněž otázku vztahu okraje, resp. okrajů a centra sociálně sdíleného literárního prostoru a poukazuje na možnost obohacení dosavadního obrazu české literatury daného období o další fasety.

The collection of interpretive essays At the Edge of Czech Fine Artists’ Literary Works focuses on literary works by Czech artists of the 20th century (particularly those associated with the interwar avant-garde, and authors whose careers began during the second half of the 20th century), whose writings, while secondary to their activities as artists, represents a vital aspect of their work. These essays deal with artists of various generations and disciplines, including painting, drawing, print graphics, sculpture, photography, and film. Individual chapters, conceived as standalone essays, follow a range of aspects and approaches to the material: monograph, genre (memoirs, diaries and other personal records, haiku), thematic content (reflections on the war and prison experiences), artistic tendencies (surrealism), and associations with various artistic groups or circles (Crusaders’ School of Pure Humour without Wit and Czech grotesque, Stubborn Ones, Zlín Circuit), as well as comparisons (and commonalities) between certain artists. As a whole, the collected volume raises the question whether the phenomenon of dual artistic-literary careers is specific to one or more periods, or to a particular artistic direction or directions. It also explores whether and how an author’s artistic orientation affects the nature of his or her literary output. Implicitly, and from a number of perspectives, it also deals with the relationship between the edge and centre of literary production, a topic that has often been overlooked by literary criticism and not thoroughly ‘excavated’ by literary history, in spite of its potential to enrich our understanding of, and provide new perspectives on, literary production during the period in question and with regard to such aspects as genre, etc. Broadly speaking, the reception of literary works created by fine artists is often determined by the nature of their creative work, with the consequence that written output is commonly read as the accompanying manifesto, ideological statement, linguistic key or analogue to their visual images. At the Edge runs deliberately counter to this tendency, with the aim rather of ‘bracketing’ the texts to some degree in order to understand them as independent manifestations. The goal is not to analyze intermediate links, but to reflect on selected aspects of the observed texts as autonomous spaces of meaning. In line with modern secular hermeneutics, these essays carry out their interpretations as a specific form of conversation, in some cases leading to a re-assessment of the sovereign status of these literary-artistic manifestations, and of the most fitting and productive framework in which to read them.
