Mnoho českých příjmení bylo motivováno povoláním původního nositele. Příjmení byla odvozena z označení profese (např. Tkadlec), z činnosti (např. Zukal „tkát“), z označení nástrojů (např. Kolovrat) nebo jejich částí (např. Huněk). Vycházela též z označení výsledných produktů. Příjmení byla ovlivněna českými a moravskými nářečími (např. Tkáč) a stejně tak i německou terminologií a profesní mluvou. Tato pojmenování jsou svědectvím o sociolektech v době svého vzniku.

Many Czech surnames were motivated by the profession of the original bearer. They were derived from the designation of a profession (e.g. Tkadlec ‘weaver’), from verbs expressing work activity (e.g. Zukal ‘weave’), from the names of tools used for production (e.g. Kolovrat ‘spinning wheel’) or from the names of their parts (e.g. Huněk). They also arose from the names of the resulting products. Surnames were influenced by Czech and Moravian dialects (e.g. Tkáč ‘weaver’), as well as German professional vocabulary and terminology. They are a testimony of the sociolect at the time of their creation.
