The study examines the different Old Czech translation choices of „thrown into the furnace“ and „folded into a haystack“ for the Latin phrase „in clibanum mittitur“ (Mt 6:30). The unusual interpretation of the Latin „clibanum“ as „haystack“ comes from the commentary of Nicholas of Lyra and persisted in the Czech Bible translation into the printed Bibles of the 16th century. A survey of manuscripts and prints reveals the tension between literal translation and translation according to meaning, and reveals the influence of recognized authorities such as Nicholas of Lyra on Czech biblical exegesis.
