The question of the object and method of Marxist philosophy was raised in Eastern European Marxism again in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The efforts to answer it initiated a methodological turn in Marxist philosophy. This took two basic forms: that of „metamarxism“ and that of „concrete Marxism“. Each of these placed different emphases, whether it was a reformulation of materialism or a conception of dialectical method. The lecture analyses the case of Czech Marxism to show that different conceptions of praxis were also developed. The main thesis of the lecture is the claim that the philosophy of praxis was born out of a methodological turn, which had implications for the various areas addressed by Marxist philosophy.
