Kniha je pokusem o syntézu dějin německého myšlení epochy osvícenství, sahající od Ch. Thomasia a G. W. Leibnize až po Schillera či Jeana Paula, jaká v moderní literatuře chybí. Ukazuje konstituci moderní německé filosofie v souvislostech s kulturními a společenskými dějinami 18. století a sepětí osvícenského racionalismu s jejich modernizačními prvky. Osvícenství se v politicky roztříštěném a zaostalém německém prostředí vyvíjelo nikoli odvržením, nýbrž složitou konverzí dosavadní duchovní tradice, a prosazovalo se jako genuinně křesťansko-humanistický projekt navazující na lutherskou reformaci. K jeho zásadním rysům patřilo propojení s tvorbou moderní občanské kultury, s rozvojem knižního trhu, žurnalistiky, světského umění a empirických věd. Úměrně tomu se kniha nevěnuje pouze univerzitní filosofii a teoretickým spisům, nýbrž také prezentaci filosoficky fundovaných postojů v estetice, dějepisectví, kazatelství či v krásné literatuře. Právě v německém osvícenství se zrodila estetika jako samostatná věda a prostřednictvím básnictví a jeho reflexí docházelo k celospolečenskému šíření osvícenských idejí, k utváření čtenářské, kritické a debatující veřejnosti.

The book is an attempt to synthesize the history of the German thought during the Enlightenment, dating from Ch. Thomasius and G. W. Leibniz to Schiller or Jean Paul, which is lacking in modern literature. It shows the constitution of modern German philosophy in the context of the cultural and social history of the 18th century and the interplay of Enlightenment rationalism with its modernizing elements. In a politically fragmented and underdeveloped German environment, the Enlightenment developed not through a rejection but through a complex conversion of existing spiritual traditions, and asserted itself as a genuinely Christian-humanist project building on the Lutheran Reformation. Among its essential features were its links with the creation of modern civic culture, the development of the book market, journalism, secular art and the empirical sciences. Accordingly, the book is not only devoted to university philosophy and theoretical writings, but also to the presentation of philosophically informed positions in aesthetics, history, preaching, and fiction. It was in the German Enlightenment that aesthetics was born as a science in its own right, and it was through poetry and its reflections that Enlightenment ideas were disseminated throughout society, shaping a reading, critical and debating public.
