This chapter focuses on how a wider historical context can considerably constrain comparative research in urban studies in a particular locality at a particular time. Yet, constraining conditions may also stimulate a search for alternative strategies to develop dialogues across regions and borders. The chapter focuses on the region of Central Europe during the Cold-War era and the strategies of comparison in urban research developed by European scholars across the Iron Curtain. Then it discusses the specifics of comparative urban research on so-called post-socialist cities today.
