Rare earths (REE) are in today's society key elements in the technological development of our society. Their use is closely linked to the development of new technologies (microprocessors, renewable energies, electromobility...), all of them essential technologies for the new European green energy transition model. The European Union is deficient in REE, exporting almost all of it from third countries, mainly China. In 2020, the European Commission presented an Action Plan on Key Raw Materials with two main objectives: to diversify their import and to achieve a comprehensive system of extraction, processing, recycling and refining of these elements. As a result, the different municipal and industrial wastes, as well as tailings from mining operations, should be considered as potential sources of REE. In order to know their potential as a secondary source of REE, this study evaluates and compares the concentration of these elements in ashes from coal-fired power plants with different municipal and industrial wastes and mining tailings.
