The paper is a critical review of the book by Chan, Stephen (2021). African Political Thought. An Intellectual History of the Quest for Freedom. This book stands on the idea that Africa does not develop in a vacuum. The contacts with other people and cultures allowed the emergence and the development of a rich and complex body of political thought, characterised not only by African traditions, but also by the history of slave trade, the struggle for independence, the establishment of post-colonial regimes, and the current neo-liberal expansion, often equated with the notion of globalisation. This book represents an enjoyable read. It pays more attention to English-speaking African countries than to French-speaking ones.
