Výstavba přehrad je jedním z nejvýraznějších zásahů, jimiž člověk již více než století proměňuje krajinu kolem sebe. Velká vodní díla byla v době svého vzniku vnímána jako prostředky modernizace a pokroku, současně však přispívala k zániku řady jiných, kulturních i přírodních hodnot. Jejich historie není jen historií technického a hospodářského rozvoje, odráží rovněž proměny vztahu moderní společnosti k využívání přírodních zdrojů a obývané krajině. Katalog stejnojmenné výstavy odkrývá tento ambivalentní charakter technických zásahů do krajiny na příkladu dvou nejvýznamnějších jihočeských přehradních nádrží - Lipna a Orlíku. Příběh jejich výstavby a fungování vypráví prostřednictvím historických obrazových materiálů, které odrážejí perspektivu různých dobových aktérů. Zdánlivě úzké regionální téma tak propojuje s obecnějšími otázkami vnímání, znázorňování a využívání vodního živlu v průběhu druhé poloviny 20. století.

The construction of dams is one of the most significant interventions by which man has transformed the landscape around him for more than a century. At the time of their creation, hydraulic structures were perceived as means of modernization and progress, but at the same time they contributed to the demise of a number of other cultural and natural values. Their history is not only a history of technical and economic development, it also reflects changes in the relationship of modern society to the use of natural resources and the inhabited landscape. The exhibition catalog reveals this ambivalent nature of technical interventions in the landscape using the example of the two most important dams in South Bohemia - Lipno and Orlík. It tells the story of their construction and operation based on historical visual materials that reflect the perspective of various contemporary actors. It thus connects a seemingly narrow regional topic with more general issues of perception, representation and use of the water element during the second half of the 20th century.
