Esej čtenářům přibližuje problematiku počátků řecké tragédie. Zdůrazňuje absenci jasných pramenů, která vede k opakování určitých zažitých schémat o vývoji žánru řecké tragédie a pojmenovává základní opakující se prvky těchto schémat. Ukazuje, že hlavním zdrojem i pro velice odlišné intepretace počátků tragédie zůstává krátká pasáž ve 4. kapitole Aristotelovy Poetiky. Esej upozorňuje na to, v čem je tato pasáž problematická a spíše než jako spolehlivý pramen ji hodnotí jako konstrukt vývoje daný Aristotelovou filosofickou koncepcí organického vývoje. Dále je naznačeno, jaké prvky jsou z Aristotely pasáže přejímány pro náboženské a ritualistické intepretace počátků tragédie.

The essay introduces readers to the origins of Greek tragedy. It highlights the absence of clear sources, which leads to the repetition of certain familiar schemes about the development of the genre of Greek tragedy, and names the basic recurring elements of these schemes. It shows that a short passage in Chapter 4 of Aristotle’s Poetics remains the main source for even widely differing interpretations of the origins of tragedy. The essay points out how this passage is problematic and evaluates it as a developmental construct given by Aristotle’s philosophical concept of organic development rather than as a reliable source. It then suggests what elements are taken from Aristotle’s passage for religious and ritualistic interpretations of the origins of tragedy.
