Transition metals-containing oxides are widely used in heterogeneous catalysis as catalysts for various reactions such as dehydrogenation, selective oxidation, selective reduction, removal of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and electrocatalysis. The performance of metal oxide-based catalysts depends on the methods and conditions of preparation. The sol-gel reaction is advantageous for the preparation of mixed oxide coatings combining various catalytically active components. The process involves the formation of a stable colloidal suspension (sol) by hydrolysis and partial condensation of reactants to form metal-oxygen-metal bonds, products with a fine and homogeneous distribution of components are formed. The prepared sol can be deposited on substrates to obtain supported catalysts. The deposited gel contains relatively large amount of liquid and, after drying and calcination, oxide materials with a large surface area are obtained. The aim of this work was preparation of supported
catalysts with catalytically active oxide coatings combining Ni, Co, and Mn components deposited on stainless steel supports. The precursors preparation by sol-gel method, their depoisition on supports, and thermal treatment were optimized to obtain homogeneous mixed oxide coatings with good adhesion to the stainless steel supports and good catalytic activity in VOC total oxidation.
