Fly ash and air pollution control residues, which are solid residues originating from waste to-energy plants, often possess hazardous properties. There are various methods available for mitigating these hazards and simultaneously recovering valuable components. Hydrometallurgical techniques, particularly for the recovery of salts and metals, are the most commonly employed. The presentation offers a comprehensive overview of results obtained through pilot and semi-pilot testing. These results pertain to an intricate approach aimed at maximizing the recovery of all components during the acid extraction of fly ash. Specifically, the presentation summarizes findings related to the removal of mercury from quench water, optimization of the acid extraction, cementation of heavy metals, precipitation of zinc, crystallization of salts, and precipitation of gypsum.
