Fast progress in modern information technologies requires the creation of new optical devices and diffractive elements that determines growing of activity in the related research fields. In the present work we propose a new approach for design of photo- and electro-controllable diffraction gratings. This approach is based on polymerization-induced fixation of periodic dissipative structures in nematic liquid crystals (LC) created by application of low-frequency AC electric field (50 Hz). Visible light action recovers high concentration of E-isomers and large values of diffraction efficiency. The similar phenomenon was found during an application of high frequency AC electric field (1 kHz) inducing orientation of mesogenic molecules along the field direction. Created photo- and electro-controllable diffraction gratings present promising type of materials for applications in photonics and optoelectronics.
