Apart from the clarity of exposition and the unifying view that permeates an unusually broad spectrum of sources, the chief virtue of this work lies in its courage to ask difficult questions about the consistency of Galen’s thought and to propose tentative answers to them. Here is a useful contribution to the scholarly debate that, incidentally, turns the reader’s mind to problems of enduring philosophical interest.
