This colloquium concerned the intricate relation between ethnography and biography: it explored the interplay between ruptures in anthropologists’ lives and disruptions in social worlds under study. The colloquium was inspired by Veena Das’s definition of ethnography, as a form of knowledge in which researchers recognise their own lived experiences within scenes of alterity. Colloquium participants discussed how ethnographers’ lives can be utilised when studying societal consequences of various forms of disruptions at individual, interpersonal and local levels.
