New data for the surface tension and liquid density of two binary aqueous systems with methanol and ethylene glycol were presented at the joint session of the IAPWS working groups Thermophysical Properties of Water and Steam (TPWS) and Physical Chemistry of Aqueous Systems (PCAS). The data for surface tension were obtained by the team of the Laboratory of Thermophysical Properties using a modified capillary rise technique. The experimental apparatus of own design allows for measurement under the thermodynamically metastable state. The surface tension data for supercooled aqueous mixtures with methanol and ethylene glycol obtained at temperatures down to – 28 °C can be relatively well reproduced by the correlation of Wang et al. [Ind. Eng. Chem. Res. 50 (2011) 4086–4098] extrapolated below the freezing point. In addition, new correlations for the excess molar volume of the selected systems were developed in order to determine the hydrostatic pressure of the liquid column needed for the analysis of the capillary rise technique.
