Studie se zabývá vývojem politické subjektivity v 18. a 19. století na základě analýzy sémantického pole občan - měšťan - soused - vlastenec v češtině a němčině. Tato pole jsou dnes v češtině a němčině výrazně odlišně strukturována a kladou proto obtíže překladatelům. Studie dokládá, jak se původně analogické polysémy měšťan / Bürger začaly na počátku 19. století diferencovat a reflektovat v různých jazycích odlišně proměny politických koncepcí občanství na přechodu od absolutismu k občanské společnosti. Studie při tom polemizuje s dosavadní hypotézou Jana Sokola.

This paper deals with the conceptual history of citizenship in early modern Czech and German culture and language. It documents the ambiguity in the meanings of “Bürger” and “mešťan” as “burgher” and “citizen” in Czech and German throughout the 18th century and its consequences for the translation of these concepts until today. It then describes the beginnings of the differentiation of these meanings in Czech during the first half of the 19th century. By showing this dynamic development, the paper challenges the hypothesis that the difference of the meanings in contemporary Czech and German is based on an essential difference between the two cultures.
