The properties of bubbles in aerated systems are very important for the calculation of gas holdup and mass transport coefficient. In this experimental project, the behaviour of an isolated bubble and bubbles in a swarm in the water - glycerol system was compared. The sizes (equivalent diameter), deformations (aspect ratio), and velocities of the bubbles were compared as functions of the solution viscosity and the gas flow rate at one orifice in a small aerated column. The data obtained show that up to a concentration of 60 wt. % of glycerol, the effect of viscosity is smaller than in the case of an isolated bubble, and the gas inlet velocity has the greatest effect on bubble behaviour.
