In the present communication, we will resume the results of our detailed investigation of the effect of non-ionic surfactants on the coalescence of bubbles. Using high-speed visualization of the lifetime of two identical bubbles growing side-by-side, it was determined how the coalescent efficiency, and the bubble contact time, depend on the gas-liquid interphase properties at the instant of first contact between bubbles. Five non-ionic surfactants with different adsorption kinetics were investigated during the present study: n-propanol, n-pentanol, n-octanol, α-terpineol and Triton X100. Contact time is independent of concentration when coalesce is supressed, but in case coalescence occurs the contact time until coalescence depends on the adsorption kinetics of the surfactant present and its concentration in the bulk.
