    This work describes a method for the optical resolution of 9,10-diketo[7]helicene1, a versa-tile building block, which can be used for the construction of various helicene- based mole-cules. The study found that diketone 1 reacts with (S)- or (R)-1,T- binaphthyl-2,2'-diamine with superior diastereomeric excess, resulting in enantiopure 9,10-diketo[7]helicene after hy-drolysis of the formed diazacyclooctadiene ring. Moreover, cyclooctadiene derivative 3 can be utilized directly for condensation with ortho-diamines.
