Efficient coupling of capillary electrophoresis to surface-enhanced Raman spectrometry (CE-SERS) has a capacity to combine high separation power with the universal and ultrasensitive detection. As the signal originates from molecular vibrations, SERS can clearly identify an analyte and provide complementary data to predominantly used mass spectrometry. The principle of SERS detection requires the presence of nanostructures and their close interaction with the analytes, both of which challenge the superior separation efficiency of electrophoresis. This substantial prerequisite causes that despite the high attractiveness of CE-SERS coupling, only few achievements have been in this field reported so far.
