This is an introduction to a special-themed issue titled ‘Hearing Struggle: Musical Responses to Times of Crisis in the Czech Lands during the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries’. In its capacity as an editorial, the text introduces main themes, intersections, and recurring concepts and general questions linking the individual contributions: questions of identity, socio-cultural contexts, and historiography, among others. Furthermore, this essay draws on aspects which may not have been explicitly addressed, although they play a role throughout the whole issue, thus encouraging further research (i.e. matters of gender and class, performance, and canonisation). Finally, the text introduces and summarises the individual articles.
