A co-planar surface like dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) is characterized as a tool for trace element detection in analytical chemistry. Since helium metastables play an important role in the dissociation process of the analyte molecules, helium metastable densities were measured by tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy. Basic discharge dynamics were characterized by spatially, temporally and spectrally resolved optical emission spectroscopy.
