Svazek je sestaven z osmi pastoračních a apelativních textů, seřazených chronologicky podle data prvního zveřejnění, jimiž se Komenský snažil povzbudivě promlouvat k českým exulantům, členům Jednoty bratrské. Mezi nimi vyniká především čtyřdílný cyklus Truchlivý (Truchlivý I, asi 1623, Truchlivý II, asi 1624-1625, Řvání hrdličky, 1651, Smutný hlas, 1660), ilustrující rozdílnost mezi tísnivou atmosférou doby pobělohorské a deziluzí let padesátých a šedesátých. Doplňují jej dva stejně koncipované texty: Napomenutí (1649) připojené k vydání osmé knihy historie Jednoty bratrské polského šlechtice Jana Łasického a slavný Kšaft umírající matky Jednoty bratrské (1650) o hledání smyslu lidského utrpení a o naději pro malý národ ve světě rozvráceném válkou. K této uzavřené skupině útěšných spisů jsou připojeny dva výrazné příklady Komenského homiletické tvorby z roku 1649, ozřejmující náladu panující v Jednotě po uzavření vestfálského míru: Kázání pohřební nad Pavlem Fabriciem a Kázání o vymítání ďábelství.

The volume is composed of eight pastoral and appellative texts, arranged chronologically according to the date of first publication, with which Comenius tried to speak encouragingly to the Czech exiles, members of the Brethren Unity. Among them, the four-volume cycle Truchlivý (Truchlivý I, about 1623, Truchlivý II, about 1624-1625, Řvání hrdličky/Roaring Swallows, 1651, Smutný hlas/Sad voice, 1660) stands out in particular, illustrating the difference between the oppressive atmosphere of the White Mountain era and the disillusionment of the fifties and sixties. It is complemented by two similarly conceived texts: Napomenutí/Admonition (1649) attached to the publication of the eighth book of the history of the Brethren Unity by the Polish nobleman Jan Łasicky and the famous Kšaft umírající matky, Jednoty bratrské/Testimony of the dying mother of the Brethren Unity (1650) about the search for the meaning of human suffering and hope for a small nation in a world torn apart by war. Attached to this closed group of consolation writings are two significant examples of Comenius’ homiletic work from 1649, elucidating the mood prevailing in Unity after the conclusion of the Peace of Westphalia: Kázání pohřební nad Pavlem Fabriciem/Funeral Sermon on Paul Fabricius and Kázání o vmítání ďábelství/Sermon on Exorcism of the Devilry.
