Velocity of elastic waves is an important physical parameter of rocks. This parameter depends on density, mineralogical composition, elastic properties of rockforming minerals, crystallographic preferred orientation, grain shape, grain size, defects of grains, on pore characteristics including volume of pore space, on pore preferred orientation and fluid saturation, and on external factors such as pressure and temperature.
