Článek situuje problém identity oboru literární věda (literary criticism) do rámce dialogu s tezemi vyslovenými v monografii Johna Guilloryho Professing Criticism: Essays on the Organization of Literary Study s vyzdvižením kontrastů při formaci moderní anglosaské a české literární vědy. Text se v rámci tohoto dialogu a s uplatněním historické a metaoborové perspektivy dotýká problémů současných teorií „plochého“ a „deskriptivního“ čtení.

The article sets up the issue of literary criticism’s identity in dialogue with the ideas presented by John Guillory in his Professing Criticism: Essays on the Organization of Literary Study, and highlights the contrastive constitutive points of the formation of modern Anglo-Saxon and Czech literary criticism (science). As part of this dialogue, the text touches upon the problems of current theories of ‘surface’ and ‘descriptive reading’, employing a larger historical and meta-disciplinary perspective.
