    The results discussed in this chapter show that the constant development of intra/intermolecular transition-metal-catalyzed [2+2+2] cycloisomerization of pi-electron systems as a versatile synthetic methodology for the preparation of helicene derivatives has made them available for their intended applications. It presents several advantages over other methods used for the synthesis of helicenes in terms of functional group tolerance, structural motif variability, regio- and stereoselectivity, atom economy, scale-up and others. It constitutes an alternative to the traditional photocyclodehydrogenation methodology and, in some respects, surpasses it.
