Side-chain liquid crystal elastomers (LCE) have been designed by using a new smectic crosslinker. Two types of monodomain films were prepared based on polysiloxane chains, with a different relative concentration of both crosslinker and mesogenic monomers. The mesomorphic behaviour of the two LCE systems shows a different mesomorphic behaviour: in one case, the LCE film has a nematic phase, on the other case, the LCE film has a direct transition from the isotropic to the smectic A phase. In both LCEs, the mesophases are stable in a wide temperature range and the LCE films possess high orientation at room temperature. Physical-chemical properties, such as local orientational ordering, structural organization and dynamics of LCE’s constituents were studied by means of static and dynamic 2H NMR, SAXS and WAXS. Relevant physical properties, such as stress-strain and thermo-mechanic trends, are reported and discussed in view of practical applications.
